The easy joke with The White Stripes was always that Meg was a terrible drummer, a rehash of that old McCartney dick move by saying Ringo wasn't even the best drummer in the Beatles. And on a dispassionate, objective level, that's true. Jack always insisted that Meg was integral to the band, however, and it was in live performances that this became evident. The flaw to the "Meg is terrible" argument is that it's the dispassionate one, because the band was all about passion and primal urges clashing against constraints - of structure, recording equipment, of anything you got.

Seeing the band perform live ceased any mocking of Meg White that I ever did. Jack said she was integral to the band's nature, and it's the live show that proves it. In concert, Jack is a wild man, screaming and clawing and climbing. He's what you showed up for, but he's not what held the evening together: Meg was. No matter the theatrics and animalistic fury from the other part of the stage, there was Meg. Thump. Thumpthump. Thump. Never extravagant, frequently visibly disinterested, but steady and pounding away, tethering Jack to Earth to keep him from floating away. She gave Jack something to wail against and thus gave the band all its power. Her apparent boredom gave Jack's wildness something to fight. Meg, and Meg specifically, was necessary for the band's success, and it's never clearer in anything the band released than on Under the Great White Northern Lights.Leaskhttp://comicstheblog.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6343411309634502506.post-91995666173285690522012-10-01T11:05:42.946-04:002012-10-01T11:05:42.946-04:00That is indeed the song I meant! I knew the title...That is indeed the song I meant! I knew the title, but figured that none of the other listeners but you would, and decided to make a bit of a joke out of it. It's probably my favourite Semisonic song (though "Act Naturally" is amazing too, and has such brilliant backup vocals in the chorus that it floors me every time), and it's always bugged me that if anyone knows it, it's probably as "that song from the bus ride date montage in 40 Days and 40 Nights," which probably means that nobody knows it at all. It's such a perfect pop song that suffers only for not being released before "Closing Time," but hey, at least that means people can discover it NOW.

A side note: People almost definitely don't know Dan Wilson, Semisonic's lead singer and songwriter, but they SHOULD, even if it's only as the dude who co-wrote three songs on Adele's last album, including her first UK #1 single.

Basically, it's been a decade since Semisonic called it quits and I'm still angry Dan Wilson doesn't get the public accolades he deserves. I'm also upset people love Adele but shit talk Taylor Swift even if both are for the same reason (songs about BOYS!), but that's another conversation entirely.Leaskhttp://comicstheblog.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6343411309634502506.post-83542024969697977422012-06-20T08:24:03.521-04:002012-06-20T08:24:03.521-04:00Cheers to Ricky G and Bill Macrae for letting us r...Cheers to Ricky G and Bill Macrae for letting us release this. Favorit...In no order, I'm gonna blow your mind. Favorite albums:Mr. Bungle, Mr Bungle - Still disturbing after all these years. Sisters of Mercy, Floodland - Too polished to be truly Goth, and yet a wonderful piece of work. Pansy Division, Absurd Pop Song Romance - Would have been the pop-punk record of the '90's, except the gay thing scared many people away. Too bad, this would have been (should have been) huge. These Arms Are Snakes, Easter - Modern alienation with a surreal, noise rock sheen. Sleep Eyes of Death, Towards A Damaged Horizon - Ethereal synth music for the greatest space opera never made. Soul Coughing, Ruby Vroom - Yes, the beginning of the boho chic thing, but not their fault. Still an amazingly solid album. Tool, Aenima - Their attempt at a metal/art rock fusion was honestly a joy to behold. Black Moth Super Rainbow, Eating Us - Modern psychedelia that's like a pretty candy filled with liquid mercury. Murder City Devils, In Name and Blood - Tom Waits meets grunge in a seedy bar, over whiskey and smokes. Ladytron, Witching Hour - Glossy electro pop with an eerie glaze. Grizzly Bear, Yellow House - This is a walk in the snow on a winter afternoon. We Are Scientists, Brain Thrust Mastery - Shimmery alt pop at its finest. Sun Kil Moon, Tiny Cities - If this album doesn't relax you, nothing will. Deftones, Diamond Eyes - Some of their finest work. Really. Porcupine Tree, In Absentia - Strip the soul, kill them all indeed. Radiohead, OK Computer - I hesitated to add this one because everyone does. But it is an almost perfect album. Elvis Costello, My Aim Is True - Same for this album. Hold Steady, Separation Sunday - Boozy bar rock with a cynical undertone. Tragically Hip, Day For Night - More mellow bar rock, Canadian style.

If I didn't sign this by name, Scott, you could have guessed it was me, couldn't you?andyshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14050163251495144567noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6343411309634502506.post-7209513327742559202011-05-20T10:41:28.169-04:002011-05-20T10:41:28.169-04:00Hrm.
